Mexican Runs

Note to self: Mexican food before a long run= not a good idea.

I tested this out personally this morning.  I met some girlfriends for our monthly dinner date at a local favorite.  Knowing that I had my long run scheduled for this morning, instead of my usual Saturday long run, I took care in selecting my order and passed on the refried beans, which are a FAVORITE of mine :).  Sacrifices, right?  I did NOT pass up on the Habanero salsa or the tasty margaritas.  Fail.

I tossed and turned throughout the night as my poor tummy struggled to digest the massive amount of food I ate.  By the time my alarm went off at 4:20 this morning, my tummy had enough of me.  I met my friend Andrea J. at 5:15 with my tummy still turning.  We set off on our 12 mile route through downtown Des Moines,, leaving Grays Lake.  Surprising, I felt good!  And my tummy seemed to settle more with every step.  Until mile 4.  Then, it was turning again.  And there are not many options to stop in Des Moines before 6:00am.  Luckily, we were coming close to the Marriott, so I snuck in through the lobby.

As we got going again, I felt great.  We were keeping an amazing pace!  My legs were doing pretty good considering the speed run yesterday morning.  And conversation was making the miles tick by.  As we got near mile 7, Andrea needed a pit stop.  Good thing too.  I felt fine, until I stopped.  Then my tummy let me know it was still mad.

I decide water was going to be the trick and started drinking up what I had brought with me.  It seemed to do the trick and we finished the 12 miles strong!  Although, my love for spicy food may need to be put on hold on nights before an important run.  I’m not ready to completely break up with my spicy food love affair, but maybe hold it at bay and see what happens.  A girl can only give up so much.  I willingly tossed aside gluten, then dairy, but spice?  I think I have to draw the line.  Everything is ok in moderation, right?

Well, hopefully I’ll get some clear answers soon.  This morning’s bout wasn’t completely attributable to the Mexican food.  As much as I would love to give it all the credit, there is a much messier situation going on in my tummy than I care to admit and sadly, I gave in today, followed my physician’s orders, and called my GI Specialist for another appointment.  😦  I’ve been putting this off for months and am not looking forward to going back.  They never have any concrete answers.  We’ll see what next week brings.

On another note!  Monday, October 1, 2012 is NATIONAL TAKE YOUR DAUGHTER FOR A RUN DAY! So, get off your bums and get your favorite gal and go for a run :).
