It’s Boston Marathon Day! Not only is this the “mecca” race for endurance runners, it’s the 1st marathon since the tragedy in 2013. Boston Strong takes on a whole new meaning of perseverance and camaraderie.
I am keeping up with live updates from the course and getting inspired by the elites running right now! I have to admit, I’m geeking out! I’m especially excited to watch Shalane Flanagan run today- I think she is a truly positive role model for women and am pulling for her to have an excellent time today.
I’m ecstatic watching this year’s race, knowing that I may be among the ranks running the course next year with my BQ in Tucson this past December!
Some fast facts about the 2014 marathon:
This is the second largest number of runners racing the course in the history of the race. The course record by men is held by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai, who finished the course in 2 hour, 3 minutes, 2 seconds in 2010. The fastest women’s time was run in 2002 by Kenyan Margaret Okoya, who finished in 2:20:43. Joan Benoit Samuelson, 1979 and 1983 champion, will be running this year. She is one of three women who have won the Boston Marathon and the Olympic Marathon. And for all of you fans of the ’90’s- Joey McIntire of New Kids on the Block is running this year! Cheers!
